Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

Statesmen and Political Leaders

Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela-Mandela, also known as Winnie Mandela, was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist, born on 26 September 1936 and died on 2 April 2018. She was the second wife of Nelson Mandela and served as a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2003 and again from 2009 until her death, as well as deputy minister of arts and culture from 1994 to 1996. A member of the African National Congress, she sat on its National Executive Committee and headed its Women's League. During her husband's years in prison she became the public face of the struggle, and she was detained, banned and banished by the apartheid state. Her legacy is contested: the Truth and Reconciliation Commission held her accountable for abuses committed by her security detail, and she was convicted of kidnapping in the Stompie Seipei case and later of theft and fraud.
