Henry VII was King of Germany from 1308 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1312, the first emperor of the House of Luxembourg. During his brief reign he revived the imperial cause in Italy, then divided between Guelph and Ghibelline factions, earning praise from Dino Compagni and Dante Alighieri, and he ended the Great Interregnum that had followed the death of Frederick II in 1250. His premature death in 1313 threatened to undo his work: his son John of Bohemia failed to be elected as his successor, and a contested succession followed between Louis IV and the anti-king Frederick the Fair.
