Maria Leopoldina (1797-1826) was an Austrian archduchess, born in Vienna to Holy Roman Emperor Francis II, who became the first empress of Brazil through her marriage to Prince Pedro. She arrived in Rio de Janeiro in 1817 and played an important part in Brazilian independence from Portugal, serving as regent during Pedro's absence and influencing the proclamation of independence on 7 September 1822. She became empress consort that December. She died in Rio de Janeiro at age 29 from complications involving pregnancy, sepsis and severe depression stemming from her husband's public affair.
