Louis IV, called the Bavarian, was King of the Romans from 1314, King of Italy from 1327, and Holy Roman Emperor from 1328 until his death in 1347. His 1314 election as German king was contested by his Habsburg cousin Frederick the Fair, elected king the same day by a separate set of electors; Louis defeated Frederick at the Battle of Muhldorf in 1322, and the two eventually reconciled. He was opposed and excommunicated by the French Pope John XXII, and in turn tried to depose the pope and install an antipope. Louis was also Duke of Upper Bavaria from 1294, Margrave of Brandenburg until 1323, Count Palatine of the Rhine until 1329, and Duke of Lower Bavaria from 1340, becoming Count of Hainaut, Holland, Zeeland and Friesland in 1345 through his wife Margaret's inheritance.
