The Muscovy Company, also called the Russia Company, was an English trading company chartered in 1555 to trade with Russia, then known as Muscovy. It was the first major English chartered joint-stock company, a business structure that would soon become the model for later English and Dutch overseas trading ventures, including the East India Company. The company built a durable trade in English cloth for Russian furs, timber, tallow and naval stores, sailing via the White Sea route. It continued trading, with interruptions, until the Russian Revolution of 1917 ended its Russian operations, and it has since continued to exist mainly as a charitable body.
