The World Bank was created at the Bretton Woods Conference of 1 to 22 July 1944, alongside the International Monetary Fund, as part of the postwar international financial system negotiated by the Allied powers before the Second World War had even ended. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it describes its mission as ending extreme poverty and building shared prosperity, chiefly by lending to developing countries for infrastructure and development.
