The United Nations is an international intergovernmental organization established by the signing of the Charter of the United Nations on 26 June 1945, with the stated mission of maintaining international peace and security. It was created directly out of the lessons of the League of Nations failure to prevent the Second World War, and it inherited many of the League's functions while establishing its own headquarters in New York City. Since 1945 it has grown from a small founding membership to near-universal membership, and its agencies and peacekeeping missions have become central to international law, humanitarian relief and conflict mediation.
