Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States, serving from 1933 until his death in 1945, the only president to be elected to more than two terms. His early presidency was dominated by the response to the Great Depression through the New Deal, a program of relief, recovery and reform that fundamentally reshaped the federal government's role in American life. During his final years in office he led the United States through the Second World War as a central Allied leader, coordinating military strategy with Britain and the Soviet Union. He governed despite being paralyzed from the waist down after contracting polio in 1921.
