The Khanate of Kazan was a Tatar state that controlled the territory of the former Volga Bulgaria from 1438 until 1552, covering what is now Tatarstan, Mari El, Chuvashia and Mordovia along with parts of Udmurtia and Bashkortostan, with its capital at the city of Kazan on the Volga River. It was one of the successor states that formed after the breakup of the Golden Horde, the Mongol state whose fragmentation produced several rival Tatar khanates across the former Golden Horde territory. The khanate came to an end in 1552 when it was conquered by the Tsardom of Russia.
