The Kingdom of Asturias was a medieval monarchy in the Iberian Peninsula founded by the nobleman Pelagius, existing from 718 to 924 in the northern part of the peninsula, and it is regarded as the first Christian political entity established there after the Umayyad conquest of Visigothic Hispania in the 711 to 720s. In the summer of 722 Pelagius defeated an Umayyad army at the Battle of Covadonga, an event retroactively regarded as the beginning of the Christian Reconquista. The kingdom expanded southward under later monarchs including Alfonso II and Alfonso III before transforming into the Kingdom of Leon in 924.
