The Kingdom of Georgia, also known as the Georgian Empire, was a medieval Eurasian monarchy founded around 1008 that reached its Golden Age of political and economic strength under King David IV and Queen Tamar the Great from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries. During this period Georgia became one of the preeminent nations of the Christian East, and its network of tributaries stretched from Eastern Europe to Anatolia and the northern frontiers of Iran, while the kingdom also maintained religious centers abroad such as the Bachkovo Monastery in Bulgaria, the Monastery of the Cross in Jerusalem and the Monastery of Iviron in Greece. The kingdom emerged in the early eleventh century from the unification of several Georgian kingdoms, most notably the Kingdom of the Iberians, and it stands as the principal historical precursor of the present-day state of Georgia.
