The Kingdom of Tahiti was a Polynesian monarchy founded by the paramount chief Pomare I, who, with the aid of British missionaries and traders and European weaponry, united the different chiefdoms of Tahiti into a single kingdom composed of the islands of Tahiti itself, Moorea, Mehetia and the Tetiaroa group, later expanding to include the Tuamotus and the Austral Islands. The kingdom existed from 1788 or 1791 to 1880 and was ruled throughout by the Pomare dynasty; it became a French protectorate in 1842, and its sovereignty ended on 29 June 1880, when the last monarch, Pomare V, ceded Tahiti and its dependencies to France.
