The Purepecha Empire, also known as the Kingdom of Tzintzuntzan or colloquially as the Tarascan Empire, was a polity in pre-Columbian Mexico whose territory roughly covered what is now the Mexican state of Michoacan along with eastern Jalisco, southern Guanajuato and western Guerrero. Founded in the early fourteenth century, it was the second-largest state in Mesoamerica at the time of the Spanish conquest, built on a network of tributary systems. The kingdom lost its independence to the Spanish in 1530 and in 1543 was formally reorganized as the governorship of Michoacan.
