The Republic of Pskov was a city-state in northwestern Russia governed from the city of Pskov, with territory roughly equivalent to the modern Pskov Oblast, that gained formal independence from the Novgorod Republic in 1348 under the Treaty of Bolotovo. Through the second half of the fourteenth century the republic fell within the sphere of influence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, but in 1399 it recognized the suzerainty of the Grand Principality of Moscow instead, and its autonomy steadily diminished across the fifteenth century even as its own local institutions kept functioning. The republic's independence ended in 1510, when Grand Prince Vasily III forcibly incorporated it into the centralized Russian state, abolishing its traditional veche assembly and deporting roughly 300 families to suppress resistance.
