The Sultanate of Ifat, also known as Wafat or Awfat in Arabic sources and sometimes called the Kingdom of Zeila, was a medieval Sunni Muslim state in the eastern Horn of Africa that existed from the late thirteenth century to the early fifteenth century. Formed around the Ifat region east of Shewa in what is now Ethiopia, it was led by the Walashma dynasty and its territory stretched from the Zequalla area to the Red Sea port of Zeila, spanning parts of present-day Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somaliland and Somalia. After Ifat's fall the Walashma dynasty went on to found the successor state of Adal further east.
