The Wari Empire, also known as the Huari Empire, was a political formation that emerged around 600 CE in the Ayacucho Basin of Peru and grew to cover much of coastal and highland Peru, lasting for about five hundred years until roughly 1100 CE. It existed during the same era as the Tiwanaku culture centered around Lake Titicaca, and was for a time thought to have derived from it, though the relationship between the two societies remains debated among archaeologists.
