Alexandra of Denmark was queen consort of the United Kingdom and Empress of India from 1901 to 1910, as the wife of King Edward VII. Born Princess Alexandra in Copenhagen in 1844, she married Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1863 and held the title of Princess of Wales for thirty eight years, longer than anyone else who has held that title. When her husband succeeded to the throne after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, she became queen and was crowned alongside him in August 1902. After Edward's death in 1910, their son George V became king and Alexandra took up the role of queen mother until her own death in 1925. She remained largely excluded from political power throughout her life but was known for her influence on fashion, her charitable work, and her popularity with the British public.
