Augusto Pinochet (1915 to 2006) was a Chilean army officer who ruled Chile as a military dictator from 1973 to 1990. Born in Valparaiso, he rose through the army to become its commander-in-chief in August 1973 under President Salvador Allende, and on 11 September 1973 he led the coup that overthrew Allende and installed a military junta. He was named Supreme Head of the nation in December 1974 and president soon afterward. His government is associated with the persecution of leftists and critics, including thousands of executions, disappearances, imprisonments and acts of torture, and with free-market reforms drawn up by the so-called Chicago Boys. A 1980 plebiscite approved a new constitution, and after losing a 1988 plebiscite he stepped down in 1990. He was arrested in London in 1998, returned to Chile in 2000, and died in 2006 with many charges still pending.
