Charles V was Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria from 1519 to 1556, King of Castile and Leon from 1516 to 1556, and King of Sicily and Naples from 1516 to 1554, also ruling the Netherlands and holding the titular Duchy of Burgundy from 1506 to 1555. He was heir to and then head of the rising House of Habsburg, and his European dominions stretched from Germany and northern Italy through the Austrian hereditary lands to the Burgundian Low Countries and Spain with its southern Italian possessions. In the Americas he oversaw the continuation of Spanish colonization and a short lived German colonization effort. The combined European and American territories under his rule were the first to be described as an empire on which the sun never set.
