Eadred was King of the English from 26 May 946 until his death in 955. He was the younger son of Edward the Elder and his third wife Eadgifu, and came to the throne after his brother Edmund I was killed while Edmund's own sons were still children. Eadred suffered worsening ill health through his reign, never married, and died in his early thirties, after which the crown passed to his nephews, first Eadwig and then Edgar.
