Edmund I

Edmund I, also called Eadmund I, was King of the English from 27 October 939 until his death in 946. He was descended from Alfred the Great through his father Edward the Elder and his mother Eadgifu, and came to the throne after the childless death of his half-brother Æthelstan. He fathered two sons, Eadwig and Edgar, who were still minors when he was killed in a brawl with an outlaw at Pucklechurch in Gloucestershire in 946. His younger brother Eadred succeeded him, and Edmund's own sons later took the throne in turn after Eadred died in 955.
