Frederick III was Holy Roman Emperor from 1452 until his death in 1493. He was the penultimate emperor to be crowned by the pope and the last to be crowned in Rome. As the fourth King of the Romans and the first Holy Roman Emperor from the House of Habsburg, his reign began a Habsburg hold on the imperial title that, with one gap, lasted until Emperor Francis II declared the empire at an end in 1806.
