George III was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 25 October 1760 until his death in 1820. During his reign, Great Britain and Ireland were merged into a single kingdom under the Acts of Union of 1800. He was the first Hanoverian monarch to be born in Britain and to speak English as his native language, and although he also held the titles of Duke and Prince-Elector of Hanover, and later King of Hanover from 1814, he never visited Hanover during his lifetime.
