Mary I was Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 and Queen of Spain as the wife of King Philip II from January 1556 until her death in 1558. She worked to reverse the Protestant Reformation begun under her father, Henry VIII, though Parliament blocked most of her attempts to recover confiscated church property. Her reign saw more than 280 religious opponents burned to death in what became known as the Marian persecutions, which earned her the later epithet Bloody Mary.
