Melisende was queen of Jerusalem from 1131 to 1152, the first female ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the first woman to hold public office in the crusader kingdom. Her generous support of the kingdom's various Christian communities won her fame in her own lifetime; the contemporary chronicler William of Tyre praised her wisdom and abilities, though modern historians differ in their assessment of her reign.
