William II, commonly known as William Rufus, was King of England from 26 September 1087 until his death in 1100. He held power over Normandy and influence in Scotland, though he was less successful extending his control into Wales. He was the third son of William the Conqueror, and his epithet Rufus most likely referred to his ruddy complexion or red hair.
